Are you an ardent fan of‘ A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin or its screen adaptation Game of Thrones? If the wait for the remaining books in the series is too tedious and you are someone who enjoys reading the parody of the same, then Deepak Kaul’s Game of Codes should not be missed.
A Song of Ice and Fire and Game of Thrones are such gigantic series that they provide a lot of scope for after creatives like fans’ theories and parody. And these are equally popular like the original. Deepak Kaul himself being a self-professed enthusiast of the series. He has come up with his satire set in the contemporary era of technology and start-up.
The book starts with corporate politics and the scene of firing. For once, I thought that there would be a lot of corporate drama related to internet security and scrutiny. But gradually, the familiar characters start emerging with their known traits all set up in the modern era. They are all involved in the cut-throat competition to make their mark in the corporate world and occupy the iron throne. And they used every tactic in their arsenal to meet the objective. The treatment in the parody was similar to that in the original series.
Humorous sarcasm is the sole purpose of the parody. And Deepak Kaul was bang on target in this regard. The subtle presence of sarcasm would keep you hooked and interested in the storyline as to know the outcome of this rat race.
However, the author didn’t go deep into describing or developing characters. If you have read the original or watched the series, then you will be well aware of all the characters and how they behave. The character development lacked any creativity.
The author has picked up different characters all in the rat race to dominate the iron throne. He has established a thin connection between them, but they hardly feel like blending effortlessly to become a coherent tale.
Overall, I enjoyed reading this contemporary parody on the Games of Throne. I have my laughing out loud moments in the book.
